Western Architecture: From Ancient Greece to the Present by Ian Sutton,
Western Architecture: From Ancient Greece to the Present by Ian Sutton,
From the earliest classical temples to today's achievements, over two thousand years of Western architectural history are summarized. Every architectural style is the product of an ideology, and the author shows how the buildings of Greece and Rome, of the Early Christian and Byzantine centuries, of the Gothic Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment grew out of their respective cultures. In the nineteenth century the story in Europe and North America became more complicated, with the competing forces of Romanticism and industrial functionalism leading to apparently contradictory results -- a situation that continues today in the clash between postmodernism and high-tech. But perspectives change, and every decade has its own views of the past. Eastern Europe has inevitably been underrepresented in Western criticism since 1945; Czech Baroque, Polish Neoclassicism, and Hungarian Art Nouveau provide some unexpected revelations.

Western music - Western music is a broad category of music that includes all musical genres that use a 12-note chromatic scale, including Western classical music, rock and roll, and many other forms of popular music. The word Western may be misleading; although much of this music came from Europe and music of the United States, important contributions have come from places like Russia, Japan, and Australia.

Book music - Book Music is the European version of making mechanical music medium for organs in Europe and it is actually similar to piano rolls, but book music is produced by thick cardboard, with perforated holes, and it is presented and played in a folded zig-zag style. Paper rolls were never popular in Europe, so the book music was an instant standard of perforating arranged music.

European art music - In its broadest definition, the term "European art music" refers to music stemming from traditions in Western Europe that took root after the fall of the Roman Empire. Continuing to flourish today, Western music is now listened to, performed, composed and appreciated across the globe.

Parlour music - Parlour music, actually having little to do with parlours, is Peter van der Merwe's term for the unified style common to popular and semi-popular light-classical and popular, and folk-like music of nineteenth century Europe, "distinct from 'folk' music and uncontaminated by highbrow pretensions." This is the middle and low brow music which European classical music began to gradually and eventually self-consciously distance itself from beginning around 1790.
